چکیده

Intraoperative hyperglycemia has been observed to be associated with increased morbidity and mortality after cardiac surgery. Dextrose cardioplegia is used for its cardioprotective effects but may lead to intraoperative hyperglycemia and more postoperative complications. This was a retrospective observational study. Patient records (n = 2301) were accessed from a large database at a tertiary care facility. The two groups (dextrose vs. nondextrose) were then matched using preoperative variables of age, sex, body mass index, wound exposure time, preoperative HbA1c levels, renal failure, hypertension, and prior cerebrovascular disease. The following outcomes were recorded: 30-day mortality, sternal wound infection, stroke, and highest glucose level on cardiopulmonary bypass. The dextrose cardioplegia group showed statistically higher intraoperative glucose levels (272.76 +/- 55.92 vs. 182.79 +/- 45, p value = .0001). There was no difference in postoperative mortality, sternal wound infections or stroke incidence, nor in other secondary outcomes. The type of cardioplegia solution was shown to affect glucose levels; however, there was no effect on postoperative complication rates.

The administration of dextrose during in-hospital cardiac arrest is associated with increased mortality and neurologic morbidity

INTRODUCTION Dextrose may be used during cardiac arrest resuscitation to prevent or reverse hypoglycemia. However, the incidence of dextrose administration during cardiac arrest and the association of dextrose administration with survival and other outcomes are unknown. METHODS We used the Get With The Guidelines®-Resuscitation national registry to identify adult patients with an in-hospital ...

The buffering ability of commonly employed cardiopulmonary bypass solutions and alkalizing agents.

This experiment evaluated the hydrogen ion (H+) buffering capacity (BC) of solutions and alkalizing agents employed during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). A solution's BC can be determined when a known quantity of H+ is titrated into the solution and the change () in pH (-log of the hydrogen ion activity ([H+]a)) is measured ([H+]a/mmole H+). Eleven solutions were studied:Lactated Ringers (LR), 0...

Effect of in ovo feeding of amino acids and dextrose solutions on hatchability, body weight, intestinal development and liver glycogen reserves in newborn chicks

Early development of the digestive tract is crucial for achieving maximal growth and development of chickens. This study examined the effects of in ovo (IO) feeding of 0.70 mL of dextrose (10.00% and 20.00%) or amino acids solutions into the yolk sac at day 14 of incubation on small intestine histomorphometry and histomorphology, intestinal development, hatchability, body weight, and l...

Cellular aggregation and destruction during blood circulation and oxygenation.

Platelet and leucocyte aggregation and severe haemolysis may occur in blood during the preparation of an extracorporeal circuit for open-heart surgery. Experiments with dog blood showed that both processes result from bubble oxygenation but not from circulation of diluted blood and that they appear to be inhibited by the presence of acid citrate dextrose and heparin, or citrate phosphate dextro...

Myocardial protection with Glucose-Insulin-Potassium infusion during adult cardiac surgery

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE Recent meta-analysis reports have called for more randomized trials to evaluate the effectiveness of GIK solution in patients of cardiac surgery. So this study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of Glucose-insulin-potassium (GIK) solutions in non-diabetic patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting. METHODS A total number of one hundred and sixty (160) ...
